Flaring Mad:
German national Hans Peter Kugler was released on $10,000 bail after being charged
with possession of a prohibited firearm and wantonly discharging it. The firearm
was a flare gun that was fired while a Paradise Islands aircraft was flying near
to Mr Kugler's Paradise Island penthouse residence. Mr Kugler pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It's Still Around:
The Drug Enforcement Unit of the Royal Bahamas Police Force seized over 1,500 lbs
of marijuana from a site near the old Diamond Crystal Salt plant at Hard Bargain,
Long Island.
Airport Roof Collapses:
Two people were injured, one seriously, when the roof, ceiling and air conditioning
system at the domestic departure area at Nassau International Airport collapsed on
10th August. One of the injured was a Civil Aviation Department employee, the other
an employee of Nassau Flight Services.
Bahamian Arrested on Smuggling Charges:
Bahamian Addison Hepburn, 44, of Freeport, was charged in West Palm Beach with smuggling
illegal immigrants after a vessel dropped at least 34 Haitians on a sandbar near
Jupiter Inlet. One man and one woman drowned during the landing. Hepburn could face
life imprisonment or the death penalty if found guilty.
