GOOMBAY SUMMER FESTIVAL

The final Goombay Summer Festival presentation in Marsh Harbour on 4th September brought to a climax a most successful summer season. For seven weeks the people of Abaco and visitors from all over the world gathered to eat and drink, have fun and be entertained. Two of the Goombay Summer celebrations were held at the All Abaco Regatta site, Green Turtle ferry dock.

A number of different entertainers performed during the festival including the Royal Police Force Band, the Defence Force Band, Antonio Fawkes, Stone McEwan, Summer Heat, the Goombay Dancers, the Lassie Doe Boys, the Spring City Rockers, limbo dancer Desmond Cartwright, firedancer Queen Mevie and many more. There were fashion shows, skits, plaiting of the maypole, Junkanoo parades, merengue dance demonstrations and plenty of rake & scrape and calypso music.

On hand for the final show of the summer was Craig Woods, the Ministry of Tourism's General Manager - Out Islands. "This event is unique," he told the thousands assembled at Dove Plaza forecourt. "There is no Goombay Summer in Nassau. There is no Goombay Summer in Freeport. Abaco is the only island presenting a Goombay Summer Festival this year." Mr Woods congratulated all those who worked hard to make the Goombay Summer Festival '98 such an outstanding success, particularly Sherry Parker and Wynsome Ferguson of the Abaco Tourist Office.
