GARDENING
by Jack Hardy
Now is the time for all home gardeners on Abaco to go to Pine Woods Nursery and buy
the vegetable seeds and seedlings they need for the new season. Just about any vegetable
can be planted now, as can flowering annuals, bulbs and perennials. It's a great
time of year!
Tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplants, squashes, cucumbers, and other fruiting
vegetables can be sown direct as soon as possible. Many gardeners prefer to wait
until late October or early November before planting spinach and lettuce. Most members
of the cabbage family do well during our winter months though Brussels sprouts are 'iffy'.
Virtually any flowering annual will also enjoy the pleasant warmth of our winter season.
Again, it makes sense to sow both seeds and starter plants, both available from Pine
Woods Nursery. Your purchases of bedding annuals from Pine Woods during October will aid the Abaco Cancer Society.
