NATIONAL NOTES
Gold and Silver:
In addition to the gold medal won by Chandra Sturrup in the Women's 100m at the Commonwealth
Games in Malaysia, Jackie Edwards won silver in the Women's Long Jump with a distance
of 21ft 7 1/2 ins.
Murder Suspect Remanded:
18 year old Terrell McIntosh of Nassau was remanded in police custody on 21st September
after having charges read to him involving the Paradise Island deaths of American
visitor Lori Fogleman and British visitor Joanna Clarke. Subsequent remands were
held at Fox Hill Prison due to the considered propensity towards suicide of the remand.
Hurricane Georges Visits:
A construction worker was killed in Nassau when cement blocks fell on him, pushed
by gusty winds from Hurricane Georges. Four South Andros men who were missing in
a boat during the storm turned up safe and well. Damage to the southern islands of
The Bahamas was minimal and, once again, a serious threat was averted.
Tunnel to Paradise Island:
Work is approaching completion on a tunnel to Paradise Island which will exit at the
Royal Towers of the Atlantis Resort from Nassau. There are also plans for a second
bridge to Paradise Island to facilitate access to a resort community expected to
rival Las Vegas.
New US Ambassador:
The new United States Ambassador to The Bahamas is Arthur Louis Schechter, 59, a lawyer
by profession. He and several family members arrived in Nassau on 7th October. Texan-born
Mr Schechter has received many awards and honours, including awards from the Jewish Chautaqua Society, the NAACP, and Who's Who in Society. He replaces departed
ambassador Sidney Williams who was held in very high esteem by the people of The
Bahamas.
