THANK YOU, SHERRY
The following letter was received by the Minister of Tourism on 30th March.
Dear Minister,
I write to tell you of the quite exceptional enthusiasm and helpfulness of one of
your employees.
My yacht has recently been in Marsh Harbour. While visiting her I made attempts to
find a good bone fishing guide, all of which more or less failed. Very luckily for
me, I then walked past the small Bahamas Tourist Office in Marsh Harbour and thought
I might as well enquire there.
Never was there a better decision. The young lady who runs the office not only had
strong recommendations, but immediately began calling. She set me up with a young
man, Patrick Roberts of Sandy Point, who proved to be good company, excellently equipped,
and a very fine guide. We did quite well on a challenging day.
But it is the young lady who is my reason for writing. I had no car to get to Sandy
Point, and my yacht is far too deep of draught. The young lady, whose name I much
regret that I only know as Sherry, immediately offered to drive me in her own car
- more than fifty miles. She did that, early in the morning, and even came back to pick me
up in the late afternoon. She was entertaining and informative about the island.
I was quite staggered by her kindness.
If one tenth of Bahamians are as amiable and hospitable as Sherry - and in fact I
have found that quite a lot are - then you have a happy country. If one tenth of
your civil service are as dedicated and enthusiastic as Sherry, then you must have
one of the best-governed countries on earth. Make no mistake that I will be back, and that I
will tell this story to every yachting and fishing friend I have.
Yours faithfully,
Francis Q O'Neill,
Upperville, VA.
