SAND BANK YACHT CLUB NOTES
by John Lacey
Seventy-one members and twelve house guests gathered at The Bluff House on Green Turtle
Cay for a champagne brunch on 14th March. Thirty or so journeyed on a chartered Lowe's
ferry from the Green Turtle Ferry Dock. The rest braved the Whale Cay swells by boat. Champagne flowed from the moment we landed. The Bluff House catered a cash bar
for those who preferred a different libation. Promptly at 11.30, the revellers dined
on their choice of roasted ham with tamarind glaze, sliced roast beef, chicken-apple
salad, stewed grouper, Eggs Benedict, red potato salad, lettuce salad, couscous and
vegetables, bread rolls, Bailey's cheesecake and Key lime pie. A good time was had
by all.
Fifty-eight members and seventeen house guests convened by boat at the Nunjack Cay
dock for lunch on 7th April. On arrival, each participant received a wicker basket
filled with baked chicken, potato salad, three bean salad, French bread and grapes,
cloaked in an embroidered Sand Bank Yacht Club napkin beautifully created and sewn by our
lovely and talented Club member, Barbara Farnan. Later, cookies and cheese were served
to the few whose appetites had not been assuaged by the picnic baskets. Sodas, beer,
wine and stronger beverages were served continuously.
While at Nunjack, we took pleasure in exploring the manicured trails which comprise
the nature preserve lovingly created there by Percy Pinder, the well known Green
Turtle Cay resident. We enjoyed the dock, the ocean-side gazebo and lookout tower
which are part of the preserve. Brave members challenged the ocean-side rollers with snorkels
and fins. Those who preferred quieter waters swam from the pristine leeward beach.
A few fished. A few walked the beach. Most lazed and conversed in the shade, while
digesting the excellent fare. All agreed that it was an excursion well worth repeating.
The Club's sincere gratitude is extended to Percy Pinder for allowing us to visit
his beautiful nature preserve. It goes, too, to the officers' wives and other ladies
who helped to prepare and serve the food under Helen Shelly's supervision. It goes
to all who assisted Club officers to procure and serve the beverages and to haul heavily-laden
boats to and from the picnic site. Lastly we thank each participant for leaving Nunjack
Cay as beautiful and litter free as we found it.
The 1998 Sand Bank Yacht Club Change of Watch Dinner will be held in 21st January
1999, not 14th January as previously announced.
