Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Deputy Island Administrator
Jack Thompson. Also in attendance were MP Robert Sweeting, Island Administrator
Everette Hart and Chief Councillor Mike Malone.
The national anthem was beautifully sung by Police Corporal Gaynell Hanna
and Police Reservist Ossie Parker added a few lovely songs to those of
Gladstone McEwan, whose professional repertoire impressed many of the guests.
Head of the Abaco Police Department ASP George Mortimer introduced the
Deputy Commissioner as a man who had come from humble beginnings and passed
through the ranks to his present high position. DCP Farquharson congratulated
the officers on Abaco for a job well done during the past year, noting
that they had not always had all the resources they needed. He particularly
congratulated Abaco for its strong contingent of Police Reserve Officers.
Nationwide, said the Deputy Commissioner, crime was still on the increase,
particularly in the use of firearms and drug trafficking. He urged the
public at large to support the Force in its efforts by assisting in police
investigations and reporting any information they may have. DCP Farquharson
concluded by exhorting members of the Abaco Police Department to continue
their tradition of loyalty, honesty and good conduct.
Certificates of Appreciation were presented by the Department to individuals
who had been supportive during the past year. Attendees enjoyed a meal
of steak and grouper prepared by Executive Chef Dietmar Uiberreiter, followed
by Italian cheesecake. There were several major functions on the island
that same evening, consequently attendance at the Police Ball was lower
than in previous years.
