GARDENING
by Jack Hardy

May is the month when the weather on Abaco says 'Summer!' no matter what the calendar indicates. The only vegetables that will be doing well are cherry or summer variety tomatoes, okra, eggplants, cucumbers and some natives veggies such as beans and pumpkins, as well as tropical favourites like Malabar spinach and chayote.

After the weird winter we have just experienced, when nights were often too cool to sit out in, May will bring in the best of Bahamian weather and settled night temperatures. The lawn will need weekly attention and any cuttings taken will thrive.

The sap is rising, rain is plentiful and the sun is hot. All this means optimum growth for our tropical shrubs and trees. Make sure they have plenty of food to grow on and produce their flowers and fruit.

Northern gardeners don't do much in winter. Bahamian gardeners don't do much in summer except for mowing and weeding - and sitting out!
