FAMILY GUARDIAN INSURANCE
On a balmy evening around the pool at Abaco Beach Hotel on 3rd April, Family Life
Insurance Company officially announced its presence on Abaco. The Family Life offices
are in the B & L Building behind Bellevue Business Depot. The company's newly appointed
representative is Mrs Catherine Patterson.
In his address to the Abaco residents present at the reception, Chairman of the Board
Roscow Pyfrom said he had first come to Abaco in 1960 while working for another insurance
company. He was on Abaco to install a new agent, Gurth Albury. Later, after Gurth Albury returned to Nassau, the new agent was Mr Allan Lowe, one of the leading businessmen
in the Marsh Harbour area. "If any of you see Allan Lowe," he told the company, "tell
him that - like General Douglas MacArthur - I have returned!"
Mr Pyfrom gave a brief history of The Family Guardian Insurance Company. Three Bahamians
who worked for a non-Bahamian insurance company came to the conclusion they could
just as easily do the same work for a Bahamian owned company. Family Guardian was
incorporated in early 1965 and sold its first policy to a Bahamian on 1st February 1965.
At the end of its first year of operation the company had lost 27,000 pounds and
its assets stood at a mere 15,000 pounds. (At that time one pound was equal to US$2.80.)
"From these humble beginnings 33 years ago, the company has progressed tremendously.
At the end of last year (1997) Family Guardian showed a profit for the year in excess
of $1.8 million and assets of $45 million. You can see, therefore, we have been greatly blessed."
Family Guardian already has clients on Abaco due to one time agent Mrs Barbara Hanna,
who has now moved into a management position with the company. "We look forward,"
Mr Pyfrom concluded, "to our company being the instrument to secure the futures of
many more citizens of Abaco."
