TEE-OFF
by Joan Appleton
A bright sunny windy day, 7th January, started the new winter season for the Treasure Cay Ladies' Golf Club. A low gross/low net tournament was the game for the day. Margaret Lott won low gross and Marvel Moore took the low net prize. Peggy Horn and Peg Morgan tied for 2nd place low gross and Connie Brown won the low net.
On 14th January we had to choose the best consecutive nine holes - causing much brain work - resulting in a win for Beata Schnabel, while Mona Gillan and Marge Chance tied for second place, and Liann Kaighan and Grace Chambers tied for third. It was decided to return to our previous practice of having lunch in members' homes and to start the ball rolling, I entertained the group.
Our tournament for the week, a two-day net (flighted) competition held on 21st and 22nd January, produced the following winners. A flight - Doris Beeker, B flight - Kathy McAllister, and C flight - Jane Clark. Once a month we go to the Spinnaker Restaurant for lunch and had hoped to eat out on the terrace but, although sunny, the wind was somewhat cool and we retired inside where we partook of an excellent Caesar Chicken Salad with macaroons to follow. It is always something of an occasion and we are so well looked after by the staff that it is a pleasure to anticipate each month.
We had a team event for the 28th of the month - the total of the 2 best balls - and a tie was the end result. Peggy Horn, Kathy McAllister, Naomi Gettinger and Gere AÕHern had the identical score to the team of Doris Leeker, Meredith Hashey, Lucy Beckwith and Margot Prior.
In spite of El Niño's howling winds, 23 girls braved the elements on 4th February to play the Orange Ball game, where each player's net score must be used in turn and added to the one best net of the three other players. Quite daunting when you have the 'orange ball'!
The team of Peg Morgan, Margot Prior, Jane Clark and Sally Cliffmacher came in first, while Margaret Lott, Grace Chambers, Ann Zulauf and Shirley Birdsong (as a blind partner to complete the team) came in second and Edwina Sanger, Naomi Gettinger, Gere A'Hern and Ginne Smith took third place. It was a great relief to escape from the wind into Edwina's home where Ellie Bailey helped her with the refreshments.
We have a very congenial group and welcome all lady golfers to join us on Wednesdays at 8.30 am. Sign up at the Pro Shop before Tuesday midday and bring a sandwich on the day of the tournament.
