NATIONAL NOTES
Teacher of the Year:
Barbara Dorsette, 40, a Science teacher at Thelma Gibson Primary in Nassau, received
the 1999 National Teacher of the Year award from Governor General Sir Orville Turnquest
during a ceremony at the Nassau Marriott Resort on 25th April. Mrs Dorsette was chosen the winner from 12 school district finalists, three men and nine women. Last year's
Teacher of the Year was Abaco's Kenneth Romer of S C Bootle High School.
Junkanoo in June:
The Ministry of Tourism, along with Bahamas Festival Ltd, will be promoting the first
Junkanoo in June Festival on Arawak Cay, Nassau. There will be street dancing, craft
demonstrations, native dishes and a wide variety of cultural events featuring such
top Bahamian artists as Sweet Emily, Ronnie Butler, Spank Band, Funky D and many others.
The festival will run every weekend in June starting on Labour Day.
BaTelCo Employees Opt Out:
It is reported that the vast majority of BaTelCo employees have opted for the severance
package offered by government to reduce the number of employees before 49% of the
corporation is sold. Some reports say that only about 200 employees did not apply
for the severance package. Not all employees will qualify to receive the benefits.
First Female Anglican Deacon:
Angela Palacious made history by becoming the first woman Anglican deacon when she
was ordained by Bishop Drexel Gomez in a service televised live on ZNS 13 TV. In
attendance were Governor General Sir Orville Turnquest and Lady Turnquest. Deacon
Palacious' husband, Fr James Palacious, is the rector of St Matthew's Church in Nassau.
