PILOT CLUB OF NASSAU INTERNATIONAL
by Charlene Fernander

The Pilot Club of Nassau International came to Marsh Harbour on the weekend of 18th & 19th April to begin its official canvassing exercises for new members. The exercise was coordinated on the Abaco side by Charlamae Fernander of the Department of Social Services, who is the daughter of a Past President of the Club and the niece of another. Twenty-eight Pilot sisters, headed by 1997/98 President, Mrs Sybil Gloria Hanna, flew into Marsh Harbour on the national flag carrier on the morning flight on Saturday 18th April and took up residence at the Abaco Beach Resort & Marina and Abaco Towns.

In anticipation of the founding of an Abaco arm of the Club, a get-together was held in Hope Town at Cap'n Jack's Restaurant in the early afternoon. Pilots and guests took a ferry from Marsh Harbour to the picturesque home of the candy-striped lighthouse, did some sightseeing and had lunch. A sponsorship meeting was held at Bayview Restaurant in Dundas Town that evening. Prospective members of both sexes were invited to participate from all the Abacos and they came out in full force.

The Pilot Club of Nassau International was founded in 1974 and has boasted a membership of some 40 women and one man to date. Pilots comprise persons from every walk of life, whose common goal is to assist their less fortunate fellow men. The Club is a service organisation whose Nassau branch has adopted several agencies for those in need, including Tynes House (for the aged) and Shepherd's Nook (for unwed teenage girls). In addition, the Club sponsors one College of the Bahamas student each year and has youth branches in some of the high schools called the Anchor Clubs.

Any additional interested persons are encouraged to contact the aforementioned Charlamae Fernander or her sister, Charlene Fernander, at the Administrator's Office, or write to:
