STILL STANDING
"Exciting!" "He really made me think." "I really enjoyed it." Would you believe these were comments by schoolchildren on poetry? More specifically, they were their responses to Michael Pintard's one man show Still Standing which took place on 10th and 11th May at the Parish Hall in Marsh Harbour. It is estimated that over 500 students attended the four morning and afternoon performances.
Pintard's stage setting was a suite of household furniture - single bed included - that lent a homely and familiar air to the poems, which ranged in content from love to politics. Pintard's accurate rendering of the Nassau social scene showed how acute his observations were. One poem dealing with political favours had the audiences rocking with laughter. Pintard acted out his poems and ran the gamut of emotion from hubris to hilarity. He also provided an insight into his poems, which are included in the BGCSE Literature syllabus.
After each performance Pintard invited the students to pose questions and many of them did, some of them asking for advice on how they could become writers and poets. Pintard reminded them that writing came after reading and encouraged them to read a lot, then write.
