SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS
Earlier this school year several students of Abaco Central High School entered the
AIDS Secretariat Essay and Poetry Competition. On Wednesday 9th June there was a
presentation of certificates to the successful students. On hand were Principal Royann
Swain; Nurse Peggy Cooper of the Marsh Harbour Government Clinic; Nurse Rosamae Bain, Co-ordinator
of the AIDS Secretariat in Nassau; and Dr Rose Danella from the Institute of Human
Virology at Maryland School of Medicine. Only Grade 11 students were present as the Grade 12 students were preparing for their BGCSE exams. Receiving certificates
were first place winner Eugenia Chapman; Crystal Bostwick, Alexis Gay, Valencia Edgecombe,
Adrea Burrows and Antwonya Miller. Missing Grade 11 students were Veronard Kasseint, Lynn Lowe and Tara Greene. Grade 12 students who will receive the certificates
at their graduation are Adrian Albury, Raquel Thurston, Olivia Bethel, Katrina Adderley,
Clarice Albury, Kathryn Cash, Olivia Patterson and Jessica Cooke. The successful
students will also receive plaques at the graduation ceremony.
Dr Danella said that she had been speaking with students in Nassau about HIV and AIDS
using the Focus on Kids programme. This was developed in Baltimore but was now being
used throughout the US and has also been used in Namibia. It teaches children to
recognise signs of molestation and drug or alcohol abuse, among others. The programme
develops their decision making and negotiating skills as a form of avoidance and
defence. Dr Danella spoke to over 400 children in Nassau and the programme will expand
to the Family Islands in the coming academic year.
