ABACO TOURIST OFFICE UPDATE
by Wynsome Ferguson
Mr Patrick de Montburn, vice-president of Conquest Tours, has notified the Abaco Tourist
Office that plans are moving well ahead for Toronto-based flights and it looks as
though we will have a Saturday aircraft with 80 seats allocated to Abaco beginning
18th December 1999. As soon as the final deal is signed they will send us a schedule
and details. Their product launch will be held in Toronto on 30th August.
The 4th leg of the Bahamas Billfish Championship was held at Abaco Beach Resort 7th-12th
June. The tournament attracted some 95 boats, which is the largest largest tournament
ever held in The Bahamas. The winning vessel was Shamrock
with two blue marlins, one weighing 740 lbs. As a result of this tournament we had
some 800 visitors. All hotel rooms were booked, as well as boat and car rentals.
The tournament ended with an awards banquet where Senator Calvin Johnson, Parliamentary
Secretary, gave brief remarks.
The 3rd annual Abaco Goombay Festival got off to a great start. This event attracted
hundreds of visitors as well as locals. The festival was officially opened by Senator
Calvin Johnson, with brief remarks given by Bernis Pinder of Texaco, the co-sponsors
of the opening, and MP Robert Sweeting. Special performances were given by the Royal
Bahamas Defence Force; Angelique Rollins of Freeport, fire dancer; and Ali Parker
of Freeport, limbo dancer. Local performances included a cultural skit, native fashion
show, and a rake 'n' scrape band. The visitors were able to enjoy this entertainment
along with a variety of Bahamian dishes and drinks.
