ABACO MARKET DESTROYED BY FIRE

The Abaco Market store in the Abaco Shopping Centre, Marsh Harbour, was completely destroyed by fire in the early hours of Sunday 20th June. The store was owned by Abaco Markets Ltd and was the first supermarket on the island.

According to Abaco Markets Ltd secretary and treasurer, Reginald Sands, a report had come in that there was a fire in the back of the store at about 5 am. Fifteen minutes later another call came in saying it was, in fact, the storerooms at the rear of the building on fire. Abaco Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene quickly. "If it were not for them," Mr Sands said, "there would have been a dangerous conflagration."

As it was, the firemen had to go as far as Shell Service Station to find an operable fire hydrant. Three fire engines were able to keep the fire contained within the building. By mid-morning the interior was still smouldering but there were no flames. A glance inside the store showed all the goods and fittings black and charred.

"There's nothing to salvage," Reginald Sands said. "Everything is completely destroyed with the exception of the fire-proof safe."
