DANCES FOR THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

Breathtaking... Wonderful... Splendid... These were words heard as patrons left Alton Lowe's Garden Theatre after a performance of Dances For The Holiday Spirit by the Momentum Dance Company of Miami on 9th December. Earlier in the day winds had been cool and blustery with a threat of rain but in the end conditions were perfect for the evening performance, with an almost-full moon peeping out from behind clouds to add to the pleasure of the evening.

Artistic Director Delma Iles introduced the programme, which was specially created for the holiday season, and sought to celebrate the spirit of giving and sharing and the kindling of light in the darkness of winter. Three of the works were set to music by the Italian baroque composers Archengelo Corelli and Guiseppe Torelli.

The costumes ranged from what appeared to be flour bag pyjamas to sumptuous gold lamé trimmings, according to the nature of the dance. Of the six dances performed, only one jarred a little. It was a rather saucy Cuban duet which, while delightful in itself, did not complement the texture of the rest of the dances. Highly enjoyable was a men's piece set to Handel's Judas Maccabeus which related the background to the Hanukkah story.

Introducing the second half of the programme, Director Iles dedicated a solo piece to Alton Lowe. "It is about sharing and welcoming people into your home. Alton Lowe has been a gracious host to the dancers and has welcomed us into his home and community." The rousing finale, Trio Nel Trio, featured most of the dancers and led to long, sustained applause.

The programme was made possible by the Cultural Society of Abaco. The next presentations by the Society will feature the Bahamas Concert Orchestra in Hope Town at the Harbour Lodge on 20th January at 6.30 pm and in Marsh Harbour at the Abaco Beach Resort on 21st January at 8 pm. These times may change so please refer to local advertising of the events.
