RADIO ABACO NEWS

Boat Accident: A small boat piloted by Dr Hull of Treasure Cay ran into rocks at the mouth of Marsh Harbour harbour at around 7 pm on 31st December. Brent Cartwright of Marsh Harbour suffered injuries to his neck and back.

Boat Incident: The Crown Haven-Maclean's Town ferry was travelling from Grand Bahama to Abaco on 2nd January taking an outside deep water route when its engine cut out at 2 pm. Water entered at the stern so the 21 passengers on board all stood forward to help the situation. Several passengers had cell phones and made calls to the mainland to start a search. The ferry was located at 6 pm and towed to Crown Haven.

Sour News: The Department of Agriculture has announced that no permits will be issued for the importation of citrus fruits from Florida and Spain because of citrus canker and the Mediterranean fruit fly, which survived cold treatment of citrus fruits from these areas.

It Was Waiting to Happen... The famous traffic light in Marsh Harbour, the only one in the Out Islands, was brought down by Hurricane Michelle on 5th November. Since then it has not been replaced, despite urgings from local government representatives. On the morning of 6th January two vehicles, a Ford Aerostar taxi AB-21 driven by Wilfred Cornish and a Dodge Caravan #6503 driven by Maneus Lorfils, collided at the four-way junction. Two people were slightly injured and both vehicles were extensively damaged. It should be pointed out that there is no right of way in this situation. All drivers from all directions should come to a stop and then proceed with extreme caution.

New Traffic Flow: If you have not driven in New Plymouth for a while, be careful on your next visit. As of 6 am on 14th January there was a change of traffic flow brought about by one way traffic from The Hill west, Parliament Street, Charles Street north and Bay Street east. All side steets remain two-way.

Repair of Intersections: Several intersections in Marsh Harbour are to be repaired by Abaco Hot Mix. Work has already been completed in the Abaco Wholsale area. Key Club Road will be re-aligned to form a four-way crossing with Crockett Drive and Don MacKay Boulevard and Front Street will be paved.

New Road Created: Clearing is taking place to provide a new road linking the Marsh Harbour port to S C Bootle Highway. Part of the road goes through The Mud where nine houses had to be cleared. In the Crockett Drive area opposite Mary & Roderick's Supermarket, a small mountain of good topsoil was excavated as it would not form a good base for the road.

Abaco is Different: Extracts from the Bahamas Census 2000 show that Abaco bucks several trends. The population of The Bahamas is 304,837, an increase of 19.52% since 1990. The population of Abaco is 13,174, up from 10,003, an increase of 31.7%. In all of The Bahamas there are 9,305 more women than men; on Abaco there are 340 more men than women. There are 6,757 males, 6,417 females and 4,137 households.
