HOMEOWNERS' HOTLINE
by Edna Lacey
It's always good to return to Treasure Cay in early October to receive a warm welcome
from everyone at the airport, and to see Jerry McDonald, our cab driver, once again
waiting for us with his infectious grin.
This is proving to be a quiet autumn season along Treasure Cay Road East, Windward
Beach Road and their tributaries. October saw a slower-than-usual ingress of winter
residents returning from northern tundras, and less rigorous climes to their south,
and greater than usual, albeit temporary, exodus of the neighbourhood's year-round residents.
Among the area's more permanent residents, Ron and Hilary Cole were already at home
when we arrived, having spent all but six weeks here in Paradise this summer. Bill
Hertz was here, but had moved into the house formerly owned by Chris and Joy Fowler,
and now employed by John Rich as his boathouse. It was good to see Bill fit and well and
still working hard, and that his dog Daisy and his cats have adjusted well to their
new home.
Bruce and Doreen Barth, having spent some mid-summer time visiting friends and relatives
in Florida and Canada, have already returned and were busily and successfully redecorating
their Windward Beach home. They visited Alan Caldwell in August and report that Alan is getting stronger every day. Alan and Carol plan to spend a large part
of the winter in Florida. Keep up the good work, Alan. Our thoughts and prayers are
with you all the time. We look forward to seeing you back in Treasure Cay before
the new year is out.
Gerry and Cynthia Melzer, and Sinclair and Barbara Farnan, were here when we arrived.
Sinclair continues as the oii.net webmaster and is maintaining one of the finest
internet sites on the world wide web. We can all be proud of his contribution to
the community.
Cynthia Vernall was here, too, having recently returned from a long, hot summer in
Europe and Canada, visiting friends and relatives. Her son Paul was off the island
for a brief sojourn, but soon returned. Legrand and Beryl Curry spent the summer
here, as always, and reported they had never experienced a hotter one.
Ron and Jackie Wilson were away on a well-earned holiday in Spain and France. Ron
returned in late October, to be followed a couple of weeks later by Jackie, who had
stopped off to visit their daughter Lisa and her family. Jane Schor is in Florida
recuperating from two knee replacement surgeries, and is reportedly making a rapid recovery.
We look forward to having her back with us soon.
Gerry and Rose Mary Roberts were absent until mid-October. I just heard that their
granddaughter fell from a swing and incurred a head injury which has required many
stitches to repair. As I write this, Rose Mary is on her way to assist with her convalescence. Our best wishes go with you, Rose Mary.
Isik and Erica Erim got back late in the month from a short respite after a summer
of hectic activity overseeing the construction of their lovely new home on Windward
Beach Road. Welcome to the neighbourhood, Isik and Erica!
Buddy and Linda Gerald were here before us and spent a large part of the long, hot
Treasure Cay summer here too. They love to walk the beach and do so daily, but not,
they tell us, in this most recent torrid summer. Beata and Egon Schnabel, who thrive
on living in Treasure Cay, also spent a large part of the summer here. They are both always
so happy to see their old friends return.
Brian and Nadine Sheehe had arrived the week before us. Brian's right knee was replaced
this summer, but you'd never know it from watching him being so active on it. Bill
Bulger, too, was already here and beginning to arrange a busy Treasure Cay Golf Club
winter schedule.
Frank and Patty Kay arrived just after us, and will stay until before Thanksgiving.
It seems that Frank is becoming more relaxed about the prospect of retirement as
each month goes by! We beat John Williams and Grace in to town by a day or two, but
the short time we've spent in each other's company has been dedicated to mutual sympathy
over our cinch-bug ravaged lawns!
Judy Beck returned in the middle of the month, looking radiantly happy. Gerry and
Helen Shelly got in around 24th October and spent an exhausting but very productive
and good-natured week organising the Sand Bank Yacht Club's Hallowe'en party at their
house on 30th October.
Bill and Clair Regan, who have been sharing summer between their homes here and in
Florida, got back at the end of the month. Bill is busily refurbishing his already
beautiful garden with a host of orange marigolds, having earlier bedecked the ladies'
tees on the golf course, each with its own flower garden.
Dairell and Anna Snapp showed up just in time for the Yacht Club's Hallowe'en party.
We never doubted that they'd make it on time. Nobody loves a party more than Anna!
Dairell had the carpal tunnel on his left hand repaired just recently and it's temporarily threatening his fishing and golf activities, which doesn't sit very well with him.
You never know, Dairell, we might persuade you to take a more sedentary activity
such as contract bridge in the interim!
Charlie Morgan was in for a few days and returned with Peggy for a few more days,
to arrange for the alteration to their new residence, Villa 611, and then, by gosh,
they were gone. We'll miss you two in our neighbourhood, Peggy and Charlie, but we're
looking forward to meeting John and Norma Rich who are our new next-door-but-one neighbours,
having bought the Morgans' home last spring. Welcome to Sandpiper Beach, John and
Norma.
For a wide variety of reasons, Warren Steiner, and Pete and Molly Plumb, were among
those who deferred their arrival until early November. We welcome them back to Paradise.
Nancy Darnell, George and Carolyn Stern, Bill and Betty Richardson, Jean English,
and Nelson and Patty Radwan are expected to arrive any day now. Millie Wood, and
Roy and Audrey Baker-Romain have yet to arrive. Our spies tell us that they'll be
here in late November, but we don't quite know when.
We arrived to hear the sad news of the break-in at the newly-purchased Windward Beach
home of Wardy and Stella Thompson. We're so sorry, Wardy and Stella. What a terrible
way for you to be greeted to our neighbourhood!
We welcome Johnny and Kathy Cash to the Brigantine Bay Road community. It's good to
have you as our neighbours and we look forward to seeing more of you. We're also
looking forward to the arrival of Woody and Betsy Bracey to their new home, formerly
owned by Bill Hertz, on the Windward Beach just off the Treasure Cay Road. They haven't
moved in yet, and they intend to keep the Royal Palm residence for visits by friends
and family, but we're really looking forward to having them as our neighbours in
the near future.
Lastly, and sadly, we bid a very fond farewell to our old friends Tom and Helen Bourne
and Chris and Joy Fowler, who have, for different reasons, reluctantly decided to
remove themselves from the list of Treasure Cay homeowners. We count them among our
dearest friends and give thanks that both couples plan to return to Treasure Cay as visitors
from time to time. Haste ye back, all of you.
