CULTURAL WEEKEND AT GREEN TURTLE CAY

The Abaco Cultural Society, whose president is the well-known Bahamian artist Alton Lowe, will sponsor its ninth annual Winter Holidays Celebration on Green Turtle Cay on 5th & 6th December. The weekend this year consists of two major performances in the Garden Theatre which is located at Mr Lowe's home on Black Sound, just outside the town of New Plymouth.

The first evening's entertainment will be Friday 5th December beginning at 7.30 pm. It will feature musical numbers from 'Sunset Boulevard', 'Carousel', '110 in the Shade' and 'Chorus Line'. Returning to the stage are Joy Martone and TL Brown, both of whom have sung beautiful Christmas music, show tunes and popular songs in recent years. They will be joined by an old favourite, sculptor James Mastin. New to the cultural weekend will be Katie Duncan, a recent graduate in music from Florida State University. Of special interest to history buffs will be a monologue written by 'Homeward Bound' author Sandra Riley and performed by Travis Neff. Mr Neff will be portraying the historic figure of Gideon Lowe in a recitation which is both entertaining and amusing.

On the second evening, Saturday 6th December at 7.30 pm, again at the Garden Theatre, Katie Duncan and TL Brown will bring to life through words and music the heart-warming Christmas story 'The Forgotten Carols', a recent work by Michael McLean. The audience is presented with a series of vignettes featuring the "forgotten, overlooked, misunderstood or ignored" individuals who played roles in the Christmas story. These include Joseph, the innkeeper, a shepherd who stay behind to look after the sheep, a childless woman who basks in the joy of holding the Christ child for a moment, and the three kings. They touch our hearts and bring fresh originality to this beloved story.

Tickets for the events may be obtained by calling Pat Robert-Shaw 365-4252, Veronica Saunders 367-3643, or the Albert Lowe Museum 365-4094. Visitors to Green Turtle Cay can have an early dinner in town and then take the ten minute walk to the theatre or utilise the GTC ferry service. The ferry goes directly to Mr Lowe's dock on Black Sound and will pick up visitors for a return to town or to Treasure Cay at the end of each evening's performance.
