ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGN

Cavelle Macdonell, the Art and Design teacher at Abaco Central High, met with the local District Council and presented a proposal to design and construct 12 Anti-Littering billboards to be erected throughout Marsh Harbour, Dundas Town and Murphy Town. The Council fully endorsed the project and Island Administrator Everette Hart, who was also present at this meeting, stated: "It's a brilliant idea". The Council provided the plywood and 2 x 4's necessary for the work.

Ten of the signs were 3' x 4' and included decorative island scenes. All signs read at the lower bottom: Students Against Littering. Several of the slogans that will also be applied to the boards are as follows: Life Is Beautiful, Praise It; Respect Our Bahamaland; Littering Is
Nasty; If you are not part of the Solution you are part of the Problem; and Kicking the Habit. Also, there are plans for (2) 4' x 8' framed billboards to be erected on the highway between Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay as well as on the road heading south, near the Marsh Harbour airport. These two billboards will have soda cans nailed to the boards, spelling the word STOP.

Ms Macdonell and several students participated in an Earth Day Awareness presentation in Hope Town. During this event she met with Lory Kenyon, President of a local environmental action group Friends of the Environment, and showed her the drafts ideas for the project. Ms Kenyon later communicated that the board members unanimously offered their support and stated that: "We would be honoured to assist with this worthwhile project".

Ms Macdonell extends a heartfelt thank you the following people: Everette Hart, Island Administrator; Silbert Mills, Chief Counsellor and Lory Kenyon, President, Friends of the Environment, for their support and encouragement with this project. The students who worked on the billboards were Dexter Gay and Darron Smith (Grade 9), Dion Smith and Edward Sawyer (Grade 8), Omar Archer and Rashad (Grade 11) and Waseela Rahim and Louise Ashail (Grade 12). Also Jeff Mills and Geraint Thomas for their woodwork, Drexel Major and his crew for transportation assistance and teachers Ryan Mootoo, Mohamad Rahim, and Joyce Champagnie.
