NATIONAL NOTES

Disney Cruise Line has once more delayed the opening of Castaway Cay on Abaco and the first arrival of Disney Magic from Italy. Work on the Disney Magic, being constructed at Fincantieri Shipyards in Venice, has been set back because of work on the ship in front of Disney Magic on the construction line. The maiden voyage is now slated for 30th July.

According to Dr Perry Gomez, Consultant on Infectious Diseases at Nassau's Princess Margaret Hospital, the University of Maryland will be using The Bahamas as a test area for its HIV vaccines. In an unrelated story, Princess Margaret (the younger sister of the Queen, after whom the Nassau's main hospital is named) suffered a mild stroke while on vacation in Mustique.

Businessman, politician and sportsman Robert H 'Bobby' Symonette died in Nassau on 1st March after a long fight with cancer. Mr Symonette was the youngest House of Assembly Speaker in history and twice won World Championships in yachting.

A retrial was ordered in the case of Anthony Evans, Ellison Smith and Charles Rahming, who are accused of the murder of Government Minister Charles Virgill. The retrial was ordered after a female juror communicated to the judge that she had already made up her mind about the guilt of the accused.

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham has categorically stated there will be no discrimination against tourists entering The Bahamas. This followed further protests by religious leaders and activists against possible 'gay cruises'.
