Amex is pretty widely accepted these days, unlike 10 years ago when you
could not use a credit card anywhere. Most restaurants and up-market gift
stores will accept American Express but you might find the odd resort
(Guana Beach ?) that only accepts VISA (they were featured in one of VISA's
TV ads). Don't count on using your card as a given.....I remember a
couple who wanted to pay their $15 per head exit-tax by credit card and
they ended up having to take a cab back into town to get some cash.

I have never tried using a credit card at the supermarket and I'm not
even sure if they accept any.

Suggest you bring a healthy supply of travellers checks just
in case.... unless you really like washing dishes !
