Shark Incident at Chub Rocks

My brother, Tom, was diving at Chub Rocks and had a bizarre encounter with a shark. He said he was fishing with a couple and their two children, i.e., showing them the area, etc. They caught two Barracuda and he decided to get in the water and spear dinner. He immediately shot a Cerro Mackeral. Before he could blink, it was hit, head and tail by two Barracuda. This is the first time any of us have had a cuda hit a fish on a spear and we do a lot of diving. As he was getting over the shock of this, he noticed a Bull Shark about 7-8 feet coming in to investigate. Before he could even release the shaft, the shark had it. He went to the surface and looked down to see the shark shaking the fish loose from the spear. Suddenly, the shark headed to the surface and BUTTED MY BROTHER IN THE STOMACH WITH HIS SNOUT!!!!! This was witnessed by the people who were in the boat next to him. Needless to say, he was quite shaken. He doesn't understand what happened, i.e., why the shark didn't bite him, etc.

Before all the comments come rolling in, we have been diving in these waters for years, my brother since he was a child. I consider him one of the best freedivers, spearfishermen I know. He regularly dives with Bahamians, etc. We are VERY careful and never spear two fish in the same spot. We always move the boat after nailing a fish.

I have heard a lot of stories but this beats them all. He will post further details when he returns.
