Today is the first day of Hurricane Season 2000. I am in the States on a buying trip for Dolphin Beach Resort (yes, Bruce and I are managing partners). We do not have internet access at Dolphin because we only have a radio link phone but that is soon to change. So I'll be able to answer your e-mail. I hate that it is hurricane season again, as it seems we've just started out normal routines again. _People even have the energy to make things even nicer than before. Johnny at Nippers has professionally landscaped around the pools and up the walkway and it looks great. The other night we formed a Great Guana Cay Association (they elected me Secretary - typing skills you know) and we are fundraising for projects in and around the Cay. First up - Harbourside Restoration. Then Guana Rescue building and parking lot behind the Yellow House at the Government Dock, and then a state-of-the-art Community Playground on a greenspace across from the school. We have plenty more on the agenda including community picnics at Baker's Bay, special hoiday events and stuff. So you see, that which didn't kill us only made us stronger. Special thanks to Lyn and Michelle Borrows who are stateside and will serve as Fundraising Committee Chair. They have been so instrumental in hurricane relief. Also, Flying Dogs who wrote the first check to the Association. I am applying for tax exempt status so all of us watch for that. Memorial Day Weekend was nuts. We thought Guana would sink into the sea what with all the crowds. But alas, all was quiet by Monday afternoon. Tuesday Guana got 4 inches of rain in 3 hours. 2 weeks ago we fought a terrible fire on the Orchid Bay acreage. About 20 acres burned. Wellie and Alton bulldozed a fire break while LeAnn, Chet, Bruce, Henry, Mikey from Nippers madly dug trenches to contain the flames. We had very little h20 for the fire - no pumpers etc. They were heros. So you see the need to fundraise. As we think about Hurricane Season 2000 perhaps Board Members could discuss helping us out for the next one - establish committes - communications, supplies (like by the time we got stateside not a generator to be had on FLA.). Bruce is on the Disaster Preparedness Team which has been meeting in Marsh Harbour so as to be better prepared as a total community next time. Could be a good way to use all of your resources. Also, about 10 moorings are being installed in Kidd's Cove and Fisher's Bay in Guana. FYI. Ho
Hope this posting isn't too long - thought you'd like some news.
