We just returned from a couple weeks in heaven.
The first part of the trip was spent in Casuarina, Bone and flats fishing with
Jr. Albury of Fish Abaco.
The weather was perfect with little wind and no rain, we fished The Marls a few days and saw hundreds of tailing bones on every trip, a big plus was my first chance to cast to permit on the flats of The Marls.
We had no takes from the permit, but caught about a dozen bones each on every trip out. Many of these fish were small 2 or 3 pound fish, but we caught plenty of larger bones from 8lbs. to an 11lb. monster. (my personal best ever) While out we also caught cudas and small reef sharks on most trips.
The offshore fishing was simply amazing, The Dolphin were running so thick that
it was hard to keep your lures in the water long enough to try for billfish, We
released many of these fish to allow them to complete their spawning.
The tuna action got hot at times, with so many birds on the water that our trolled lines were knocking dozens out of the air. Sailfish were everywhere and most of the boats caught one or more on a daily basis.
The second part of our trip we stayed at Pelican Beach Villas on Pelican Shores
at Marsh Harbour, Sam and Olga have worked hard to get things back to pre-Floyd condition, and the Villas are beautiful! They still have to get trees planted and the dock rebuilt, but you will be quite pleased with the progress they have made. All appliances are new, new larger air conditioners, new televisions with cable, in short - the places are great!!
We were joined by first time Abaco visitors on the second part of the trip.
They were new to fishing and boating in saltwater, so I took them on an offshore trip with our friend the famous Robert Lowe on Seagull out of Hope Town to get them more comfortable with the Sea and the larger fish. As always Robert put us on fish, allowing our friends to catch their first Dolphin and raising a large Sailfish who took two baits but never hooked up. With this experience under their belts I carried them out in our boat, We went "out" at Whale Cay and trolled down to Cherokee most days. We raised three Blues and caught my first Marlin without a guide on the first trip out.
(we release all billfish)
On the following trips we caught another Sail, two Wahoo and lots of Dolphin and Tuna. One of the boys from Cherokee caught a 120lb. Wahoo and we heard of two Wahoo caught that were even bigger.
While out we saw two types of whales, one none of us had ever seen befor, lots of Dolphins (the mammal) some with young that swam right up to the boat, and large loggerhead turtles. Johnny is doing well at Nippers and has the dunes rebuilt below his place. There are fires burning all over the main island, and rain would help plenty, so if it rains on your trip be glad, they realy need the water. I know I have missed things, but this should give you a pretty good idea of what is up in The Abacos. e-mail or post any specific questions.
Regards...R
