Sure having a passport is a good idea if you're going to travel abroad.

But, I repeat, IT IS NOT NECESSARY for U.S. Citizens entering the Bahamas or returning to the U.S. from the Bahamas, as long as they have sufficient proof of citizenship (such as a birth certificate with raised seal, and some other form of ID). My husband had a passport, but the other 4 of us (3 children and myself) simply had our birth certificates.

Requirements for entry to the Bahamas vary depending on your citizenship (original poster did not state where he/she is from). Best advice is to check ahead with a reputable agency (customs, etc.).

Let's not steer people wrong. Were the folks you mention who got turned away at Marsh Harbor without a passport U.S. Citizens? Did they have their birth certificates (w/ raised seal) with them? It probably wasn't lack of a passport per se (unless they were from another country that the Bahamas requires have one), but for lack of sufficient documentation as to citizenship that gave them trouble.
