Hello All!

My family (8 adults, 5 children – ages 3-14, 11 ‘veterans’ and 2 first-timers), from eastern Michigan & western New York, vacationed in Abaco from April 8th to the 15th and stayed at Abaco Towns, where my folks have been owners since the mid-80’s. The condition of the resort was “as expected” and as reflected by other comments on the board. The pool was made ready right as we departed… But, also as reflected by comments on the board, we weren't there to hang around the resort – and except for sleeping, showering, gathering logistics, and a few meals, we didn’t. We accounted for 3 units – and in fact, feel fortunate that they actually opened, in spite of the general state of affairs, so that our plans remained intact.

My threesome made the hop from Ft. Lauderdale to Marsh Harbour on Island Express and except for the usual – and again fully expected – delays, no horror stories to report. Very tight connection on the return trip, but we made it…

Rented a mini-van for the week and began our touring with multiple trips, but we learned to make the most of the available spaces in the vehicle and made regular jaunts around the island with all 13 of us aboard…

Went up to Treasure Cay and had the beach essentially to ourselves – watching the reactions of the 2 first-timers at first glimpse was worth the trip in itself! 3 of us hit the golf course where the rule of the day was ‘Keep it Low!’ because the wind was stiff & steady.

The same wind kept Dive Abaco’s boat at the dock early in the week, and later in the week, I was busy elsewhere, so no scuba this trip… will just have to return again to make up for it…

Other than the wind, the weather was perfect – rained twice, both times at night…

Spent a morning-low-tide at Cassaurina Point – again had the place entirely to ourselves – and the kids had a ball shelling & studying the sea life in the shallows.

Spent partial days at Hope Town and MOW – the ferry schedule being about the only governing time constraint for the week…

We dined at the Bistro, Saps, the Jib Room (lots of dancing on the dock), the Abaco Inn, & Wally’s. We naturally stretched all of their resources with our numbers, but they all handled it relatively well… We consumed more than our share of house-special rum drinks and Kaliks as well… Difficult at best, to pick a favorite…

With 13 people, ages 3 to 62, you can imagine the different interests, priorities, etc. But, except for the diving, everyone did just about everything we wanted to do, saw the things we wanted to see, and thoroughly enjoyed the week… No phones, no TV, and no pressure… what could be further from routine? I’ve traveled a little & stayed in posh places with all of the amenities. From Steamboat Springs, Colorado, to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, to Aruba. I’ve also stayed in “3rd world” places like Xcalak, Mexico, where it’s a twenty minute drive through an armed security post to use a telephone for $2 a minute. I much prefer Abaco – and specifically Abaco Towns. Comfortable surroundings, quirky pay phones, terrific people, shopping & dining within easy walking distance, the limited beach, the dock, and the pace make for a wonderful respite from our instant gratification, go-go-go, American lifestyle. With a little more time, the rehab & reorganization of Abaco Towns / Regatta’s should benefit all of the stakeholders and again make viable a vital part of the local economy. Yes, right now the place is under construction. Yes, the rules there are different and the proximity of the ongoing work and the vacationers borders on the intimate. Keep your footwear on and watch where you’re walking – but by all means, go – and enjoy the place if for no other reason than the access it provides to the rest of Abaco…
