Dittoe this board being addicting. I'm entering a 12-step program of some kind or another because of it. But, the whole Abaco experience sells itself. The only reason I discovered Abaco was that my ornithologist brother, in the 1980's asked me to come here instead of Nassau to help a lady named Rose Marie Nahm, alias "Parrot Lady", save the Abaco Parrot. My wife, daughter, and I met her at the Conch Inn, with her researchers, from the New York Zoological Society. We made plans to rid the parrot area in southern Abaco of feral cats. Met dozens of locals at the Tiki Hut and in our nightime ventures. The "Parrot Lady" also spoke to many of the organizations and school children throughout Abaco, informing them of the plight of the parrot. Finally, Ingraham, with a stroke of his pen in far off Nassau, designated 20,000 acres as a preserve, which the parrots will benefit from. Abaconians can have the best of American and British cultures. I hope they don't make the mistake of acquiring the worst of each, like the Canadians. Just think, Canada could have had American technology, English culture and Frence cuisine. Gad, they ended up with American culture, English cuisine, and French technology. If Abaco accepts only Engish culture and American technolgy, they'll be fine. As an American, though, I'm at a disadvantage, for I could never be mistaken for a Brit; have you ever met an Englishman who was mistaken for an American while abroad?? Most Brits I've met on Abaco would be indignant if mistaken for an American. I like becoming a Conchy-Joe. Despite the political battleground among Bahamians, which is far less brutal than elsewhere, I enjoy their Nationalism. I've noticed Canadians visiting Nassau really relating to the brass bands and Bahamians singing the national atnthem, probably because in Canada they can't agree on the words to their anthem. I like going somewhere with people not addicted to obsessive TV watching like yours truly as American is, and I hope Abaco never gets more American channels other than the soaps. I also like a place where they jabber on about socccer, rugby and cricket instead of football, baseball, and basketball. This culture mix is confusing, since we Americans spell words differently, but still call it "English", while the Brits on Abaco pronounce their words differently, but still call it "English", and the Canadians spell like the Brits, but pronounce like Americans...eeyyy?? Add on top of that the Aussies add "G'day", "mate" and a heavy accent on top of it all...go figure. Despite the conflicts, I like Abaco because they don't drink weak, pansy-ass beers like Miller Light or Bud Light. A good Kahlik(not to mentin guana grabber) is like goin' from Bud Light to Wild Irish Rose, and it's better than the warm, berry-tasting stuff in England. Tis board did get lively with the frat talk, but it's not that we don't like the Frat crowd, it's just that they'll put down anything with alcohol in it. And, all the political, moral, economic, and social suspect discussed on this board doesn't really matter on Abaco, because nothin' matters after a couple of Kahliks while gazing out at the turquoise surf.
