Connie,
I agree with Charles about Treasure Cay! We have stayed in Marsh Harbour twice and Treasure Cay four times. Marsh has the most "night life" and the greater number of restaurants and over at Hopetown you'll find a small but beautiful island with plenty of charm! But for ease of arriving and leaving (Green Turtle, Great Guana, Man-O-War and Elbow Cay/Hopetown all must be reached by ferry boat after you clear Customs at the airport)and a good central location to the rest of the Abacos, it's hard to beat Tresure Cay! You can't really see all that the Abacos has to offer on any one trip, so a good way is to visit the Abacos one section at a time. Be advised that you WILL want to return, probably more than once!!
Treasure Cay has a wonderful, small village right next to the Marina. It consists of several long buildings that have a liqour store, a nice, well-stocked grocery store, a laundromat, a great bakery (you MUST get some of the local bread!)etc. The world class beach (in the top ten in the world according to National Geographic!)is a seven minute walk from the Hotel. The Marina is one of the finest in the Bahamas and "The Tipsy Seagull" bar overlooks the pool and Marina, just perfect for a late afternoon drink as you watch the sport fishing boats come in! The restaurant at the Marina, "The Spinnaker" is excellent and the manager, Vernon will take good care of you! For boat rentals you'll want to contact John Cash at JIC Rentals. Call him at 242-365-8465 and check out his informative web site at www.oii.net/JIC/accom.html. His office is in a small building located between the Hotel and the bar. This is also the place for dive gear, cart rentals etc. We have used his boats for the last four years and they were fine.
From T/Cay you'll have easy access to Green Turtle, New Plymouth, Great Guana and it's famous bar "Nipper's" (not to be missed!!) Man-O-War, Marsh Harbour and Elbow Cay/Hopetown. While at T/Cay eat at "A Touch of Class". They have a courtesy van in the parking lot in front of the Little Switzerland store every evening. Ask the staff at the hotel office to arrange a pick up.
Call the great folks in the Ft Lauderdale office of Treasure Cay and ask for an info package for the Tresure Cay Hotel Resort and Marina. 1-800-327-1584. This fine hotel overlooks the marina and you'll be able to dock your boat right behind your room! VERY simple!!
Another "must have" would be a copy of a great book called "The Cruising Guide to the Abacos" by Steve Dodge. This will get you excited about your upcoming trip as it is full of great color photos, advertisements and most importantly a full set of great and easy to use charts for the many places that you will want to visit in your boat. You can order it from Bluewater Books and Charts at 1-954-763-6533 or check out their excellent site at www.bluewaterweb.com. This book is a must have!! You'll love it!
If you have any more question that I can help you with please don't hesitate to email me! I love talking about the Abacos!! But I'd rather be there!!
