Abaco Rotarians are busily implementing a community repair project called Construction for Education in which local craftsmen rebuild homes and churches with high school students in tow as "apprentices." The high schoolers learn carpentry, plumbing, electrical work AND reading, mathematics, and science AND work ethic, community service, at the same time. This will help eliminate the huge depression issues related to helplessness we had in Florida and S.C. post Hurricane Andrew and Hugo...these young people have a sense of being able to fix things! The bigger benefit is long-term...the craftsmen need workers in their construction businesses. Abaco's businessmen will have the opportunity to watch how these youngsters work, observe if they are on time, if they are conscientious with their craft. Many of these young people will ... literally... be crafting their future in construction by what they are learning here while rebuilding their own community. For those of us that love Abaco, won't you help. If everyone who has posted on this board would send $5 or $10, we would have enough to outfit at least two portable trailers of tools needed for this Construction for Education project and Abaco will be put back together much, much sooner. Please help. Would you send $5, $10 to buy tools for this project? If you have tools or equipment to donate, let me know or send them to me and we will put them to good use! You can contact me by: o email , o phone (954) 584.2175, or o address: Sharon Kossack, Ph.D.; 3430 SW 27th Street; Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312. Once everything is organized, there will be need for sweat equity, too, if you are vacationing in Abaco and don't mind giving up a day to hammer, saw, plaster, or plumb. I will find a contact number when I'm there next weekend and post it for any who are into the Habitat for Humanity mode. This would cost you so little and would ultimately mean so much to the people of Abaco. Please send something. No amount is too little. A box of nails or screening are in the range of a dollar.
